On September 27, six young people from Portugal, aged between 11 and 24, sued 32 European Union states—the 27 that make up the European Union plus Turkey, Russia, the United Kingdom, Norway and Switzerland—before the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg for not acting adequately to face the climate crisis, which means a violation of their human rights.
The trigger was the wildfires that ravaged Portugal in 2017, an event the young plaintiffs experienced firsthand. This led them to file a lawsuit alleging a lack of political action regarding the control of greenhouse gas emissions, which lead to more fires and other disasters associated with climate change.
The goal is to obtain a binding ruling from the Court that compels States to take concrete steps towards the energy transition, thereby curbing the excess of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) generated by the current economy and which endangers human life on the planet.
